Marking your pieces
Mark every piece with your customer number. Pieces pass through the studio by the dozen and go through the kiln without you. Without the number we cannot identify, process or return a piece.
Where and how
- On the base, where the piece stands and will not be covered by glaze. A signature inside or on the side gets covered by glaze and disappears.
- Into raw or leather-hard clay, carve it legibly with a needle tool or use a stamp. Carve deep enough, a shallow line fills with glaze.
- On bisque-fired pieces and blanks, write with a ceramic pencil marked UNDERGLAZE. An ordinary pencil or marker burns away in the kiln.
- The signature must be on the piece itself, never on tape or a note. Paper burns in the kiln and tape falls off.
Unfinished pieces
If you wrap an unfinished piece in plastic to continue next time, write your number and the date on the wrap. The date tells us how long the piece has been waiting.
Check after glazing
After wiping the base, check that the signature is still legible. If glaze covered it, write it again with an UNDERGLAZE pencil.
Unsigned pieces
Unsigned or illegibly marked pieces are not processed and are set aside. If you cannot find your piece, write to us with a description and photo and we will go through the unsigned ones. If nobody claims a piece, after the deadline it is recycled, dismantled or offered for charity sale.
